I like what IDW is doing with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise.
Not to say it needed a freshen-up but, yeah, it kinda needed a freshen-up. No complete makeover but a few new influences, new authors, new approaches, a fresh wind, a few people from the outside who see New York from more than just the sewers point of view.
Because for me, the Turtles have remained more of a marginal phenomenon in recent years. I haven’t really read anything actively, just a peek here and there. I had the feeling that at some point in my life I had outgrown Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo.
After 40 years of TMNT, IDW probably also sees the time for a few fresh approaches.
The first really significant one for me is Jason Aaron’s TMNT relaunch. Although it hasn’t triggered a fever in me yet, it has certainly increased my interest and senses, so that I now twitch more frequently when a new TMNT title is announced.
The same applies to this project by the two creators with the monosyllabic surnames.
With TMNT: Nightwatcher #1, Juni Ba and Fero Pe take us to a shattered New York in the aftermath of the Mutagen Bomb. A city characterized by segregation and the uncomfortable coexistence of mutants and humans.
And where injustice grows, so do vigilantes, or as we like to call them when the good outweighs the bad, heroes.
Juni Ba keeps us guessing for a whole issue as to who this mysterious Nightwatcher is, whom some hail as the righteous one who fights for the good of mutants and against human violence. But whom others fear and condemn as a brutal vigilante, who roams the streets at night and is only out for hassle and action.
But you can read for yourself who is the powerful mutant behind the mask. It was indeed unexpected for me, but quite exciting and definitely piqued my interest for more reveals and developments.
Believe me, the read will be worth it, because Ba delivers an action-packed story with depth, while Fero Pe and colorist Luis Antonio Delgado serve up some really great, atmospheric artwork to go with it.
Well done, idw publishing, with the Nightwatcher you just got the second subscription to a TMNT title from me.
