Hellverine is dark.
Truly dark.
Sinister. Powerful. Loud. The roaring loud. Fast. Fiery...
Yes, sorry, I can only think of metalhead cliché vocabulary. Because that’s what Hellverine #3 is: Metal!
While reading, riffs are already forming and coalescing with the double bass drum.
The story about General Harms, his dalliance with hellfire and the undead he created, who now hunt him, does not seem shallow or simple, but it moves more on the surface than it drifts into depth and complexity.
But that’s a good thing. Because Benjamin Percy, Julius Ohta und colorist Frank D’Armata are all about images and the emotions and moods they evoke.
And that is gloriously exciting occult, demonic horror, the kind you don’t get too often from the pages of Marvel, but rather expect from certain indies or the good old Vertigo.
Pleasantly atypical Marvel.
The first two panels are actually characteristic of Hellverine in many ways. They show a grim, ferocious General Harms, marked by life and violence, on the one side, and a somewhat fresher, younger looking commander with a helmet, who also looks grim but rather tired and less hateful. While the comments say: „General Harms was not always this way. - He used to wear the ugliness on the inside.“
On the one hand, they reveal Percy’s sharp writing and his very special sense of humor.
They also show how well writer and artist work together. Ohta finds, creates exactly the kind of images that go with Percy’s words.
And last but not least, they immediately wrap you in a pitch-black shroud and take you on this entertaining hell ride with Wolverine, Harms and the spirits they have summoned.
Hellverine #3 was actually the strongest issue of this series so far. Visually impressive, dramatically thrilling and the soundtrack in my head is also spot on.
