The seventh issue of Ultimate Spider-Man introduces the new arc, and pleasantly enough it doesn’t do so with a big bang, but with a simmering, still calmly gliding storyline.
Harry Osborne and Peter Parker get to know their new suits and (Doc) Otto Octavious, Oscorp’s resident brain, helps them get the full potential out of Stark’s gifts.
Meanwhile, the other side is also gearing up for the quietly but clearly announced showdown. The next face-off between the Kingpin and his Maker’s Council ally Captain Britain and our two heroes will certainly not be a quiet conversation, Fisk will see to that.
Hickman is known for his multi-layered narratives, just as he is also known for losing himself in them and often overwhelming us as readers with his mental cinema.
But with Ultimate Spider-Man everything is right and on point. The timing, the quantity, the quality - in this issue alone, four main stories run side by side without us readers losing the thread, or the enthusiasm.
The characters are very well and carefully crafted. At times I even think I like some of the characters in this universe better than in the Earth-616 continuum.
Although Hickman’s basic tone is unagitated, there is always a constant tension despite the humorous lightness.
Which, in combination with Checchetto (and I’m happy to repeat it again here), who is definitely at the peak of his art so far, and his mesmerizing illustrations, leads to a true cinematic experience on paper.
Of course, kudos to colorist Matthew Wilson as well, which exactly matches this mood in terms of color and has found the perfect balance between soft pastel shades and vibrant colors.
No doubt, this is the comic series of 2024.
