With Rick Remender’s new mini-series, it really didn’t take more than a few preview pages from the publisher and the first few words of the teaser to make Grommets land directly in my subscription list.
And now that it’s finally on my desk, it really only took a few panels filled with incredible artwork by Brett Parson and colorist Moreno Dinisio and hilarious dialogue by Rick Remender and co-writer Brian Posehn to love Grommets #1.
This time we’re not going to other worlds or dimensions, but the series takes us to California in the 80s and provides a humorous, fast-paced, eventful and warm insight into the burgeoning skater culture of that era. On all levels, story and visuals, Grommets is packed with details.
Parson’s illustrations are truly stunning hidden object pictures, and I’m still discovering details when I leaf through them again.
Each character is so lovingly and individually drawn that even the guy in the back corner tells his own story.
His style fits the story perfectly. Because he skillfully balances on the border between cartoon and serious graphic novel.
Just like Remender and Posehn’s hilarious but emotional coming-of-age story about the "new kid" at school who meets the self-confident outcast at school. And above all, a story about skating. At a time when skating was not yet professional, but everyone wanted to be part of it.
Grommets #1 was a great opener that exceeded my expectations, bringing back memories of beloved movies like Dazed and Confused, Stand By Me, Fast Times At Ridgemont High and maybe even a bit Mid 90s. And even though I’m always ambivalent about these Comic of the Year candidate thingies, this series is definitely already a favorite for it.
