My admiration for Dan Watters continues to grow. I like his very prosaic style, his penchant for mysticism and dark fantasy. He likes to use cryptic metaphor and symbolism, but it is by no means off-putting. Generally, there are two reflex variations when I read stories that don't open up to me, that I don't immediately understand.
Number one, I'm fed up. And I speed up reading and/or quit.
Number two, curiosity develops, which increasingly turns into fascination and keeps me busy for a long time and intensively.
With Watters' stories the latter is the case. Basically, they remind me of Lovecraft. Despite all their complexity, they possess a certain pleasantness and suck you in. They are set in a world that seems both foreign and familiar. But above all, they provide impetus, they make you think. About things that you usually don't tend to think about.
But what makes his stories so particularly lasting is that they make you not only think, but also feel. With both, you don't immediately have a clue what actually. Is it fear? Shiver? Creepiness? Fascination? Sadness? Compassion? Joy?
Yes.
For me, Dan Watters Knight Terrors: Detective Comics is without a doubt the best story of this event. It's dark, surreal, soulful and stirring.
And I like his portrayal of Gordon. The undesignedly, dutiful hero without superpowers. The knight without armor.
I'm really looking forward to what he's going to bring us with the new Detective Comics.
But of course the story is not the only reason for my great enthusiasm. I already praised Federici's incredible artwork in the first post about this (https://www.instagram.com/p/CvnWiFQM5aS/). And of course, this has not lost a bit of its fascination. But before I overwrite you even more, I will limit it to two words: hauntingly beautiful.
I know I'm repeating myself, just think of it as a stylistic device for emphasis:
Gordon's nightmare is by far the best Knight Terror. And it will certainly resonate for a great deal longer.
